みなさん、こんにちは。ニューヨーク在住のクレアです。本日は、ウィングストン・ジャパン財団代表理事の石尾美海さんのインドでの活動についてインタビューをさせていただきました。
石尾さんは、国内外で沢山の社会貢献をされていらっしゃいますが、動物福祉にも積極的に寄付などを通して支援されている方です。インドでの活動、そして、社会貢献活動に対する想いをお伺いしました。
Today, I had the opportunity to interview Mimi Ishio, the Representative Director of the Wingston Japan Foundation, about her humanitarian work in India.
Ms. Ishio has been involved in a wide range of charitable initiatives both in Japan and around the world. She is also a passionate supporter of animal welfare, contributing through donations and other forms of support.
In this interview, we talked about her experiences in India and the values and motivation behind her commitment to social impact.
インドってどんな国？
みなさん、インドといえばどんな国を想像しますか？
インドといえば、、、
14億人もの人口を有し、モディ政権が推し進める「デジタル・インディア」構想のもと、強固なデジタルインフラ（UPI決済等）を武器に、ハイテク国家としての急成長を遂げる国。
「インドのシリコンバレー」と呼ばれるベンガルールには、GoogleやMicrosoft、Amazonといった世界的大企業が巨大開発拠点を置いています。平均年齢は28歳と、若手の労働力も豊富で、2050年には米国、中国に続く超大国になるとも言われています。
素晴らしいですよね！とても勢いのある国だなあと感じます。
When you think of India, what comes to mind?
India is home to more than 1.4 billion people and is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
Under the government’s Digital India initiative, the country has built a strong digital infrastructure. Services like UPI, a nationwide digital payment system, have transformed the way people make everyday transactions.
The city of Bengaluru, often called the “Silicon Valley of India,” is home to major engineering and research hubs for global companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
With a median age of just 28, India has a young and dynamic workforce. Many experts believe it is on track to become one of the world’s leading superpowers by 2050, alongside the United States and China.
It’s truly impressive. When I think about India, I see a country full of energy, innovation, and incredible potential.
ビハール州という地域
しかし、その華々しい躍進の対極で、貧困の重力に縛り付けられた地域が存在することを、忘れてはならないと思います。
それは、首都デリーの東方に位置する国内最貧州の一つ、ビハール州です。
人口は約1.3億人。インドの中でも特に人口密度が高い地域の一つにあげられます。一方で、最新の経済マクロデータにおいて、ビハール州の1人当たり域内純生産（NSDP）は、全国平均の約3分の1にとどまっています。多くの世帯が農業に依存している一方で、生み出している経済価値が非常に低いという「経済の歪み」が生じています。
■ 域内総生産（GSDP）に占める農業の割合：約 20% 未満
■ 実際の労働人口における農業従事者の割合：約 70% 〜 80%
この一次産業への過度な依存構造と旧時代的な家父長制が結びついたとき、その最大の犠牲となるのが「女性の教育機会」であると言われています。
「女の子はどうせ結婚して家を出る。それなら学校など行かずに、今すぐ畑仕事を手伝わせた方がいい」
これが、貧困層に深く根ざす、親たちの現実的な生存戦略となっているのです。
However, behind India’s remarkable economic rise lies another reality—one that we should not overlook.
Far from the headlines about technology and innovation, there are communities that remain trapped in generations of structural poverty.
One such place is Bihar, a state in eastern India and one of the poorest regions in the country.
Bihar is home to nearly 130 million people and has one of the highest population densities in India. Yet its economic output per person remains only about one-third of the national average.
While agriculture contributes less than 20 percent of the state’s economy, around 70 to 80 percent of its workforce still depends on farming for a living.
This imbalance means that a large share of the population relies on an industry that generates relatively little economic value, making it extremely difficult for families to escape poverty.
When this economic reality is combined with deeply rooted patriarchal traditions, one of the greatest consequences is the loss of educational opportunities for girls.
Many parents feel they have no choice but to say:
“Our daughter will get married and leave the family anyway. Instead of sending her to school, it’s better for her to help us work in the fields today.”
To many families living in poverty, this is not simply a cultural belief. It is a survival strategy.
教育による変革
そんなビハール州で、インドやアフリカに教育プログラムを提供している米国NGO『ワールドビーイング（Worldbeing）』の尽力によって、教育の在り方が根本的に見直されています。
これまでは現地の教師たちは、親が娘を学校から連れ戻そうとした時、力関係やこれまでの習慣から、反発する術もなくそのまま生徒が家に連れ帰される姿を見過ごすことしかできませんでした。しかし、米国NGO『ワールドビーイング（Worldbeing）』が導入した独自の教育カリキュラムにより、生徒、そして教師のマインドの書き換えが行われています。
このプログラムの本質は、単なるリテラシー（読み書き計算）という「認知能力」の付与にとどまらず、近年ビジネス界でも重要視される「社会情動的スキル（非認知能力）」の獲得に特化しています。
- 自己決定感： 環境に流されず、自らの意志で人生を選択する覚悟
- レジリエンス： 逆境に直面した際の、精神的な回復力と柔軟性
- 道徳・倫理観： 因習やハラスメントに屈しない、確固たる自己軸
この教育を受けた子どもたちが「学ぶことは、自らの未来を切り拓く最強の武器である」と気づき始めました。同時に、その熱量は教師たちの意識にも変革をもたらしました。
教師の一人はこう言いました。
「今までは、我が子に勉強を諦めさせようとする親や、嫌がらせをしてくるような周囲の人達に対して、反論することもできずに、ただただその場をやり過ごすのが精一杯でした。
でも、今は違います。教師として、教育こそがこの子たちの未来を守れると心から信じていて、だからこそ私たちも自信を持って親を説得し、嫌がらせをする大人から大切な生徒達を守ることができるようになりました。この仕事に、これ以上のやりがいはありません。」
とても誇りに満ちた表情でそう語りました。
教育という無形資産への投資は、教育を受ける子どもだけでなく、教師や、そのシステムを運用する大人達にもやりがいと言う大きな尊厳をもたらしました。
In Bihar, however, a different future is beginning to emerge.
Thanks to the work of the U.S.-based NGO World Being, which provides educational programs across India and Africa, the very purpose of education is being reimagined.
In the past, when parents came to take their daughters out of school, teachers often felt powerless to intervene. Deeply rooted social norms and unequal power dynamics left them with little choice but to watch their students leave, knowing many would never return.
World Being’s educational approach has begun to change that—not only by transforming the students, but by reshaping the mindset of teachers as well.
Rather than focusing solely on literacy and academic achievement, the program places a strong emphasis on developing social-emotional skills—often referred to as non-cognitive skills—which are increasingly recognized as essential for success in education, leadership, and business.
These include:
- Self-determination — the confidence to make one’s own life choices instead of simply accepting circumstances.
- Resilience — the ability to recover, adapt, and continue moving forward in the face of adversity.
- Moral courage and integrity — the strength to stand against harmful traditions, discrimination, and harassment.
As students began to realize that education was the most powerful tool for shaping their own future, something unexpected happened.
Their determination inspired the teachers themselves.
One teacher reflected on how dramatically her perspective had changed:
“There was a time when parents would come to pull their daughters out of school, and sometimes even pressure or intimidate us. We felt there was little we could do except avoid conflict.
But today, everything is different. We truly believe that education is the strongest protection these girls have for their future. That conviction gives us the courage to speak with parents, advocate for our students, and stand beside them. There is no more meaningful work than this.”
The impact of investing in education extended far beyond the children it was designed to serve.
By empowering students, the program also restored something equally valuable to the adults who guide them: a renewed sense of dignity, purpose, and resilience.
一人の少女との出会い
そんな米国NGOの寄付者として、石尾さんも、現地視察に行かれました。
学校の視察や、生徒や教師達との交流を通し、石尾さんは現地の生活すらも苦しい環境と、加えてワールドビーイングの教育の素晴らしさも目の当たりにされたそうです。そんな中で、卒業生たちとのディナーの会で一人の少女が、石尾さんに熱心に声をかけてきました。
彼女の名前はプリヤンカ。
教師によれば、以前はシャイで無口だったものの、「ワールドビーイング」の教育支援を通じて 自分の人生を生きる大切さを学び、卒業時には見違えるように明るくなった優秀卒業生と言うことでした。
「私もいつか、社会のための投資や寄付をして、他の子達のために役立ちたい。日本に行って、ビジネスを学びたい。」
「うん、いつ日本に来る？」
「資金のことを考えると……自分で行けるようになるのは、30年後かな」
彼女から返ってきたのは、グローバル経済の格差を象徴する回答でした。
プリヤンカの母親は、14歳で強制結婚をさせられ、彼女を出産し、少ないお金をやり繰りしながら一人で彼女を育てているとのこと。
スラムの極貧家庭においてパスポートの手数料や、国境を越える航空券の費用は、この地域に住む人々の可処分所得を遥かに超越していました。
石尾さんはこの時、直感的にこう答えたと言います。
「わかった。費用は出すから、今すぐ日本においで」
ワールドビーイングのNGOスタッフも全面協力しました。
スラム外から海外へ渡航する人など、現地の自治体にとってもあまり前例がない中で、パスポートの発行、航空券の手配、そして最大の難関である日本政府の「ビザ（査証）」を
取得するための引受人保証─。いくつもの手続きを一つひとつクリアし、数ヶ月後、プリヤンカとワールドビーイングのメンバーはついに東京・羽田空港にやってきました。
石尾さんとの会話から、夢の来日を果たしたプリヤンカ。
官邸トップのご夫人をはじめ、約50名の心ある方々が集まる晩餐会で、プリヤンカは堂々と経営者たちとの意見交換を楽しみました。翌日のランチ会で、彼女はこう語りました。
「日本でたくさんのインスピレーションをもらいました。だから次は私が、村にいる 子どもたちに 光を与える側になりたい」
そこにあったのは、自らの意志で社会を変えていく「リーダー」の決意そのものでした。
それから数年が経ったある日のこと。インドにいるプリヤンカから石尾さんに連絡が入りました。
『東京で夢を見つけて、今は地元のトップクラスの大学に通っている』と。
ただ30年を待つはずだった少女が、自らの手で未来を手繰り寄せた。
この事実こそが、石尾さんにとっては何より嬉しい報告だったそうです。
As a donor to the U.S.-based NGO World Being, Ms. Ishio had the opportunity to visit its programs in India firsthand.
During her visit, she toured local schools and met with students and teachers. She witnessed not only the harsh realities of life in the community but also the remarkable impact of World Being’s educational programs.
One evening, at a dinner with the program’s graduates, a young girl eagerly approached her.
Her name was Priyanka.
According to her teachers, Priyanka had once been extremely shy and rarely spoke. Through World Being’s educational support, however, she learned the importance of believing in herself and taking ownership of her future. By the time she graduated, she had grown into one of the program’s brightest and most confident students.
She told Ms. Ishio,
“One day, I want to invest in society and make donations to help other children like me. I’d love to go to Japan and study business.”
Ms. Ishio smiled and asked,
“Great. So when are you coming to Japan?”
Priyanka hesitated before quietly replying,
“Considering how much it would cost… I probably won’t be able to go for another 30 years.”
Her answer spoke volumes about the reality of global economic inequality.
Priyanka’s mother had been forced into marriage at the age of 14 and gave birth to her shortly afterward. As a single mother, she worked tirelessly to raise her daughter with very limited income.
For families living in extreme poverty in the slums, even the cost of obtaining a passport or purchasing an international airline ticket was far beyond what they could realistically afford.
At that moment, Ms. Ishio made an instinctive decision.
“Then I’ll cover the cost. Come to Japan now.”
The World Being team immediately rallied behind the idea.
International travel was almost unheard of for young people from the community, so every step was a challenge: obtaining a passport, arranging flights, and, perhaps most difficult of all, securing a Japanese visa with the required financial guarantor.
After months of careful preparation, Priyanka and members of the World Being team finally arrived at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
What had once seemed like an impossible dream had become reality.
During her stay in Japan, Priyanka attended a dinner attended by around 50 business leaders and philanthropists, including the spouse of a senior Japanese government official. Despite her age and background, she spoke confidently, exchanging ideas with executives from various industries.
The following day, she reflected on her experience.
“I’ve received so much inspiration in Japan. Now I want to become someone who brings hope to the children in my own village.”
In that moment, Ms. Ishio saw not simply a student, but a young leader determined to change her community through her own actions.
Several years later, Ms. Ishio received a message from Priyanka in India.
“The trip to Tokyo changed my life. I found my dream there, and now I’m studying at one of the top universities in my region.”
The girl who once believed she would have to wait thirty years had instead taken control of her own future.
For Ms. Ishio, there could have been no greater reward than hearing those words.
社会貢献活動への想い
石尾さんは、この他にもカンボジアでの学校修繕やロサンゼルスで小児ガンの子供たちへのチャリティー活動、動物福祉団体への寄付などを行っています。
世界各地で社会貢献活動をしておられる石尾さん。その想いを語っていただきました。
石尾さん：
「環境問題について考える時、ふと娘の姿が思い浮かぶんです。彼女は小学生の時に、カナダのサマーキャンプで海の生き物をどう守るかについて学んで以来、環境保全に対して大変興味を持っています。普段からプラスチックの利用を避けるだけでなく、以前家族でアメリカに行った時には、池に浮いているペットボトルを見るなり「魚が死んじゃう！」と心配して、カタコトの英語で現地スタッフにゴミの回収をお願いしていました。その姿を見た時、大人こそがまず手本を示さなくては、と母親ながらに思ったんです。私の途上国や環境保全への取り組みは、命や自然を大事にする夫や娘の姿から学びました。なので始まりは、「大切な人が大切にしているものを守りたい」というシンプルな動機だったんです。
2014年から、家族や当時の社員と一緒にチャリティをはじめました。そののちに、インパクト投資や国際フォーラムでのパネル登壇、海外首相との会食、議員の方々と勉強会といった、素晴らしい機会をいただくことができました。そのような方々と接する中で、世界には解決されていない課題が数多くあることを知りました。投資家であり慈善家でもある知人からは、人身売買の子どもたちをトラックから救出した時の話を聞きました。とても胸が痛くなりました。「すべての人や命が幸せであってほしい」と願えば願うほど、自分の無力さを感じることも多くあります。でも、だからと言って立ち止まるのではなく、娘が池のゴミを見て迷わず行動を起こしたように、私たち大人が見せるべきなのは、愛を持って未来に進む姿、そう、信じています。」
石尾さんとの会話を通して、これらの想いは決して綺麗事ではなく、心からそう思って行動されているということを感じました。家族を本当に大切にしながらも、その愛を家族だけではなく世界にも注いでいらっしゃる。
前述の通り、石尾さんはインドの少女の人生を変えましたが、私自身も、石尾さんと出会えて本当によかったと思っている一人です。
In addition to supporting World Being, Ms. Ishio has contributed to a wide range of philanthropic initiatives, including renovating schools in Cambodia, supporting children battling cancer in Los Angeles, and donating to animal welfare organizations.
Through her work around the world, she has remained committed to creating positive social impact. When asked what continues to drive her, she shared the following:
Ms. Ishio:
“Whenever I think about environmental issues, my daughter is the first person who comes to mind.
When she was in elementary school, she attended a summer camp in Canada where she learned about protecting marine life. That experience sparked a deep interest in environmental conservation.
Since then, she has made a conscious effort to reduce her use of plastic. On one family trip to the United States, she noticed a plastic bottle floating in a pond. She immediately became worried and said, ‘The fish are going to die!’ Then, using her limited English, she asked a staff member to remove the trash.
Watching her that day made me realize that we, as adults, need to lead by example.
In many ways, my commitment to helping developing countries and protecting the environment was inspired by my husband and daughter, both of whom have always cherished life and nature.
So, in the beginning, my motivation was actually very simple: I wanted to protect what the people I love care about.
In 2014, my family and the employees at my company began participating in charitable activities together. Those experiences eventually led to opportunities I never imagined—impact investing, speaking on international forums, meeting world leaders, and participating in policy discussions with lawmakers.
Through those experiences, I came to understand just how many urgent problems still exist in our world. One investor and philanthropist I know shared the story of rescuing children from human trafficking. Hearing that was heartbreaking.
The more I wish for every person—and every living being—to live with dignity and happiness, the more I realize how limited my own ability is to change the world.
But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. Just as my daughter didn’t hesitate to act when she saw trash in the pond, I believe it is our responsibility as adults to keep moving forward with compassion, hope, and love for others.”
After speaking with Ms. Ishio, I came away convinced that these are not simply beautiful words or ideals. They are principles she genuinely lives by.
She treasures her own family deeply, yet her compassion extends far beyond those closest to her. It reaches people she has never met, communities across the world, and even animals and the natural environment.
As mentioned earlier, Ms. Ishio changed the course of one young girl’s life in India.
In my own way, I also feel incredibly fortunate that our paths crossed.
動物福祉への想いについて
私自身が特に共感する部分として、やはり動物福祉に対する想いがあげられます。ご自身も愛犬家である石尾さん。動物福祉に関しては、どのような想いをもっていらっしゃるのでしょうか。
石尾さん：
「人も動物も、かけがえのない命です。自分では声を上げられない存在だからこそ、守れる立場にいる人が行動することが大切だと思っています。私自身も、愛犬と共に暮らしていますが、たくさんの愛や癒しをくれます。そんな彼ら彼女達を心から大切にしたいと感じています。」
まさに、動物たちは人間のようには言葉を話さないからこそ、無知や誤解が起きやすく、結果的に苦しめられているケースが多々あります。毎日十分に散歩をする、排泄物は拾う、しつけをする。そんな飼い主一人一人の（飼い主だけではなく社会全体もですが）ほんの少しの意識変革が動物福祉をより良くしていくと私も信じています。
One part of our conversation that resonated with me most was Ms. Ishio’s passion for animal welfare.
As a devoted dog owner herself, I asked her what inspires her commitment to protecting animals.
She answered:
“Both people and animals have lives that are precious and irreplaceable.
Because animals cannot speak for themselves, I believe those of us who can must choose to speak and act on their behalf.
I share my life with my own dog, who brings me so much love, comfort, and happiness every day.
That is why I want to do everything I can to protect and care for animals.”
Her words deeply resonated with me.
Animals cannot tell us when they are suffering, which makes them especially vulnerable to misunderstanding, neglect, and abuse.
I believe animal welfare begins with the small choices each of us makes every day—giving our pets enough exercise, cleaning up after them, providing proper training, and treating them with kindness and respect.
Of course, creating a better world for animals is not only the responsibility of pet owners. It is something society as a whole must care about.
Real change doesn’t always begin with a grand gesture.
Sometimes, it begins with a small change in awareness—one person, one family, and one act of compassion at a time.
石尾さんへのインタビューを通して
今回の石尾美海さんへのインタビューを通し、石尾さんの数々の社会貢献の根底にあるのは「目の前の命と可能性を大切にしたい」という想いだと感じました。特にインドの少女のとのエピソードから、少女の真剣なまなざしと純粋な言葉を聞いて、直観的に「私が支援する」と決められたその決断力。
心の底から、「社会を良くしたい」という想いを持っていらっしゃるからこそ、このような素敵な貢献ができていらっしゃるのだと感じました。そして、一見不可能と思えることでも、可能性は無限大！と思わせていただきました。
石尾さんのように、私自身も「どのような社会を創りたいか」と問いながら、毎日を過ごしていきたいと思います。

As I reflected on my conversation with Ms. Ishio, I realized that everything she does is rooted in one simple belief:
Every life matters, and every person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.
What stayed with me most was the story of Priyanka.
When Ms. Ishio looked into the eyes of a young girl with a sincere dream, she didn’t spend weeks analyzing the situation or wondering whether it was possible.
She simply decided,
“I’ll help.”
That ability to act with both compassion and conviction left a lasting impression on me.
I believe that the reason Ms. Ishio has been able to make such a meaningful impact is because her desire to create a better world is genuine.
She doesn’t just speak about making a difference—she lives it.
Her story also reminded me that what seems impossible today may simply be an opportunity waiting for someone to believe in it.
After this interview, I found myself asking a new question:
“What legacy will I leave for the planet?”
It is a question I hope to carry with me every day. Ms. Ishio, thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story and your vision with us.
